Epileptology Center at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan

In June 2018, the Epileptology Center was established at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Center’s operations cover four key areas: diagnostics, treatment planning and implementation, additional examinations, and — when necessary — surgical intervention.

Each year, the Epileptology Center provides consultations to more than 1,500 patients, performs over 1,000 EEG studies, conducts approximately 30 open neurosurgical brain operations, and carries out around 10 stereo-EEG diagnostic procedures and vagus nerve stimulator implantation surgeries.

Last year, the Center introduced the invasive stereo-EEG method, which allows for the monitoring and control of epileptic seizures that originate in deep brain structures. This is achieved by implanting electrodes with 8 to 18 contacts into the targeted areas of the brain.

This technique enables precise localization of seizure foci within the brain’s deep structures. Last year, the epileptologists at the Medical Center Hospital performed this procedure on 10 patients.
