When choosing the date of examination it is important to know how much time expired after the treatment administered to you. In order to avoid any false-positive results after the last course of chemotherapy, X-ray therapy or surgical treatment you HAVE TO WAIT at least 1 – 3 months before doing a PET-CT examination.

If you suffer from diabetes mellitus or have ever had allergic reactions to iodine-containing contrast agents you HAVE TO SPECIFY this when arranging an appointment for a PET-CT examination.

PET-CT is the labour intensive and, consequently, long-time procedure. The time of patient’ stay in the Department, irrespective of the type of examination, is normally about 4-5 HOURS! Thus, when arranging an appointment for a PET-CT examination you should take account of the time of your arrival to and departure from Astana.


How to prepare for a PET-CT examination

24 hours before the examination patients should avoid excessive physical activity, abstain from drinking of alcoholic beverages and using of alcohol-containing medicaments.

During the cold season, the patient must wear warm clothes, preferably such that keep him or her a little bit hot.

On the day of doing the PET-CT examination the patient must be HUNGRY, he or she may only drink sugarless noncarbonated water in any amount, the more the better.

If you suffer from diabetes mellitus you HAVE TO SPECIFY this when arranging an appointment for the examination. To obtain a high-quality image in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus, their last meal and use of antihyperglycemics (insulin, pills) is possible only the day before the examination (before 11 p.m. of the previous day). On the day of examination the patient must be HUNGRY, he or she may only drink sugarless noncarbonated water in any amount, the more the better. Before administering of radiopharmaceutical the personnel of the Department will measure your plasma glucose level and the obtained value will be communicated to radioisotope diagnostics doctor, who shall make the decision whether to do or to cancel the examination (in cases of high values).


What to bring with you

1. Identity card;

2. Referral to PET-CT examination with the official seal of the referring organization specifying the name of the Hospital.

For example: Referred to PET-CT examination with the aim of specification of oncology disease generalization in the Department of Nuclear Medicine of RSE MC Hospital of the PAA of the RK;

3. Detailed discharge epicrisis with official seal specifying:

Types and dates of administered treatment;

Blood analysis results: glucose and creatinin, not older than 10 days;

Information about presence of any allergy, iodine allergy, and diabetes mellitus.

Attention! Before positioning for the PET-CT examination the patient must make sure that he or she has no metal-containing items on (chains, belts, jewellery, etc.) Patients are strongly requested to put off all those items before the beginning of the examination so as to avoid wasting time when positioning in the CT-scanner.
