Hormones control all the processes in human body – we laugh, cry, rejoice or grieve by their virtue. Growth and sexual development, functions of thyroid, adrenal and basal glands, reproductive health, obesity are monitored by endocrinologists.

Impaired hormonal balance leads to serious consequences, and diabetes is one othe most severe diseases.

International Diabetes Federation being concerned by the growth of diabetes mellitus all over the world, had established World Diabetes Day on the 14th of November, together with World Health Organization in 1991. Since 2007, World Diabetes Day is conducted under supervision of the United Nations Organization. Blue circle is the logo of World Diabetes Day.

Blue circle means unity of world’s diabetic community in the combat against epidemy of diabetes. It is the international symbol of diabetes awareness.

Today, more than 463 million people worldwide have diabetes mellitus, and every second adult is not followed up by a doctor. According to International Diabetes Federation, more than 735 thousand persons in Kazakhstan live with diabetes mellitus, and about half of people suffering from type II diabetes mellitus know nothing about their disease, that leads to severe consequences. Sometimes, time from first symptoms of disease to diagnosis may take up to several years. Diabetes mellitus is the leading cause of renal insufficiency, blindness, amputations.

Persons with family history, excess weight, suffering from cardiovascular pathologies, as well as persons above 45 are in the risk group. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by stable increase of glucose in blood, may occur at any age and  remains for the rest of life. There are:

  • Type I, or insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus
  • Type II, or insulin-independent diabetes mellitus.

Growth in diabetes occurrence is related to type II diabetes, its share is growing and accounts for 85% of all the cases.

For controlling disease and living full-fledged life, you must: avoid gaining excess weight, maintain therapeutic diet, exercise, quit smoking and alcohol abuse, avoid stresses; control level of blood glucose and cholesterol, attend endocrinologist, take medicine only upon doctor’s prescription and undergo complete medical check-up once per annum.

You should seek medical advice if you notice:

  • permanent thirst
  • rapid weight loss or gain
  • dry mouth, frequent urges to visit toilet
  • non-healing pustulous skin disorders
  • increased fatiguability

Maybe the reason of your ailment is increased level of glucose in blood.

It is very important that people with diabetes regularly control level of blood sugar in order to prevent development of serious complications.

Diabetes mellitus can be prevented by following simple health rules:

  • weight control
  • healthy nutrition (reduce consumption of sugar and saturated fats)
  • physical activity
  • refusing bad habits
