“Dangerous sweetness: diabetes awareness and overcoming in modern society”

Every year on the 14th November the world celebrates World Diabetes Day. This day was selected and officially registered in UN International calendar to honor the birth date of Frederick Banting, who discovered insulin.

Today, there are more than 537 million people in the world, diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. According to the forecast of International Diabetes Federation (IDF), by 2045 the number of diseased may grow up to 783 million. Ministry of Healthcare of the Republic of Kazakhstan informs that 439 327 adults and 5132 children live with diabetes in Kazakhstan.

Goal of the World Diabetes Day is to increase people’s awareness about this disease. On this day, employees of Healthy Lifestyle Formation Center, together with endocrinologist Akbayan Markabayeva had conducted Health School, where patients had been told about disease symptoms, possible complications and necessity to undergo check-up and regular preventive medical examinations.

Besides, the patients had been informed that people living with diabetes mellitus have access to modern methods of diagnostics and monitoring of disease, all the patients receive blood glucose meters and test strips. The patients have also been reminded about symptoms of diabetes mellitus: permanent thirst, frequent urges to urinate, dehydration, hunger, exhaustion; vision impairment, muscular weakness, itch and skin rash.

The patients have been handed memos about diabetes mellitus, foot care, nutrition with diabetes mellitus, self-control diaries.
