World Sleep Day: How to Sleep Well?

World Sleep Day has been annually held on the Friday before the spring equinox at the initiative of the International Sleep Day Committee of the International Association of Sleep Medicine since 2008.

According to the WHO, an adult needs six to eight hours of sleep a night. The dangers of sleep deprivation have been repeatedly discussed. It significantly affects quality of life, mood, performance, well-being, and accelerates the aging process.

A Sleep Laboratory was established at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan to conduct screening diagnostics of sleep disorders. Doctors at the Sleep Laboratory at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan help patients with snoring and apnea (sleep apnea). Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: loud intermittent snoring, sleep apnea, restless not refreshing sleep, frequent nighttime urination, painful daytime sleepiness, arterial hypertension, excess body weight, reduced memory and attention. Auto-СPAP is a device that monitors various breathing parameters and provides automatic adjustment of effective treatment pressure in real time in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, helps in the therapy of patients.

Alfiya Abzhanova, a doctor at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, is the head of the functional diagnostics department. Her work experience is more than 35 years. She gave several recommendations on proper sleep hygiene.

  • Get up and go to bed at the same time.
  • Avoid using gadgets 1.5-2 hours before going to sleep
  • Air the room before going to sleep
  • Try to sleep on orthopedic mattresses and pillows

The laboratory of sleep at the Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan has been functioning since 2015.
