Internal Medicine Department No.1 (Internal medicine, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology)
Highly qualified medical care in the Department is provided both to the assigned contingent of public employees, and to any patient, including foreign citizens who have applied to the Presidential Hospital on a paid or contractual basis.
Services of the Department
The Department specializes in providing medical care to patients with complex pathology of internal organs, including:
- Bronchial asthma
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other obstructive pulmonary diseases
- Malformations of the lungs and bronchi, complicated by the infectious and inflammatory process
- Infectious lung diseases (pneumonia)
- Interstitial lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, various morphological variants of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, histiocytosis X, alveolar proteinosis, sarcoidosis, exogenous allergic alveolitis, lung lesions in systemic connective tissue diseases, pulmonary vasculitis
- Respiratory disorders during sleep
- Comprehensive rehabilitation after a new coronavirus infection COVID 19
- Inflammatory bowel diseases (ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease)
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers in the acute stage

Roza Agubayevna Bakenova
Chief therapist of the Medical Centre Hospital of President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Pulmonologist, Therapist of the Highest Category.
Dr.Bakenova graduated from the medical faculty of the Karaganda State Medical Institute with a degree in “medical care”. She worked as a general practitioner, head of pulmonological and therapeutic departments in the city and regional hospitals of Karaganda city. Specialization in ENT pathology.
Dr.Bakenova is a general practitioner of the highest category since 1990. She studied at the clinical residency at the Karaganda State Medical Institute for Therapy, defended her dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences in the specialty 14.00.43-pulmonology in 1995. She worked as an assistant, since 1998 as an associate professor of the Department for Propedeutics of Internal Diseases of the KSMA. She was the chief visiting pulmonologist of the Karaganda Regional Health Department. In 2000, by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Kazakhstan, she was awarded the academic title of associate professor.
Since 2004, she has been the head of the Internal Medicine Department of the RSE NSMC, a leading researcher at the Center for Internal Medicine of the NSMC, Scientific Secretary of NSMC. She was trained at the faculties of advanced training of doctors in internal medicine, pulmonology, and emergency care in pulmonology, functional and radiation diagnostics in Kazakhstan, Russia, Austria, Germany, Spain, as part of training at the school of the European Respiratory Society (ERS).
Dr.Bakenova completed her doctoral studies in the specialty “Internal Diseases” at the National Scientific Medical Center. In 2010, she successfully defended her dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences on the topic “Interstitial lung diseases: clinical and pathogenetic characteristics and predictors of the progression of pulmonary fibrosis”. The results of research activities have been repeatedly reported at the congresses of the European Respiratory Society in Berlin (Germany, 2008), Vienna (Austria, 1997, 2009), Barcelona (Spain, 2010), at international forums of the CIS countries (Almaty, Astana, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tashkent, Bishkek, Kazan, Yekaterinburg).
She is engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases — interstitial lung diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, various morphological variants of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, histiocytosis X, alveolar proteinosis, sarcoidosis, exogenous allergic alveolitis, lung lesions in systemic connective tissue diseases, bronchial asthma, COPD, pneumonia, pulmonary vasculitis, bronchiectasis lung disease, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, COVID-19, as well as Covid-19-associated pneumonia. She developed and implemented algorithms for the diagnosis and treatment of interstitial lung diseases, other chronic diseases of the bronchopulmonary system, pneumonia in the National Scientific Medical Center, the Medical Centre Hospital of President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, a number of institutions in Astana, Karaganda cities. The method of video thoracoscopic and puncture biopsy of the lungs, morphological verification of various clinical and morphological variants of interstitial lung diseases was introduced with her participation in the pathomorphological department of the NSMC, the pathomorphological department of the Regional Clinical Hospital and the Regional Diagnostic Center of Karaganda, the Department of Pathological Anatomy and Forensic Medicine of the Karaganda State Medical University.
On the initiative and with the active participation of Dr.Bakenova, the Presidential Hospital has introduced the method of transbronchial puncture biopsy of the lungs and intra-thoracic lymph nodes, which is a mini-invasive biopsy method allowing to verify the most difficult respiratory diseases in the diagnosis – various morphological variants of idiopathic interstitial pneumonia, lung sarcoidosis, lung oncopathology, etc. in the shortest time possible, without significant violation of the patient's quality of life.
The Presidential Hospital is the only clinic in Kazakhstan, where on the initiative of Dr.Bakenova, thanks to the support of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Medical Centre of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan has introduced a method for studying the diffusion ability of the lungs which allows to determine gas exchange disorders at the level of the alveolar-capillary membrane of the lungs.
Dr.Bakenova has more than 300 publications, including a number of foreign publications, non-zero impact factor publications.
Since 2012, Dr.Bakenova has been the chief therapist/pulmonologist of the Presidential Hospital, a consultant to a number of medical institutions in Astana, providing advisory assistance to patients with severe respiratory system lesions from various regions of Kazakhstan.
Dr. Bakenova participates in the development of clinical protocols for the diagnostics, treatment and prevention of respiratory system diseases.
In addition to clinical activities, Dr.Bakenova gives a course of lectures on topical issues of pulmonology for residents, interns at the cycles of advanced training of doctors at the scientific and educational center of the Presidential Hospital, trains residents and undergraduates of the NJSC “MUA”, Nazarbayev University (UMC). PhD and Master’s theses were successfully defended under the scientific supervision of Dr.Bakenova.
Dr.Bakenova is one of the founders of the Euro-Asian Respiratory Society and is the first General Secretary of this society. Currently, she is a member of the Presidium of the Euro-Asian Respiratory Society, the Association of Pulmonologists of Central Asia, GOLD-a member of the European Respiratory Society, a member of the Russian Respiratory Society and the Russian Society of Rheumatologists, the Association of Therapists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, heads the Multidisciplinary Expert Commission on Interstitial Lung Diseases in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Awards for success in providing medical care to patients, training of healthcare professionals: the order “Kurmet”, “Birlik” gold medal of the National Assembly of the Republic of Kazakhstan, badge of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan “For contribution to healthcare”, “For excellent work” badge of the Presidential Hospital, the medal of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, KSMU named after P.M.Pospelov “For contribution to the development of KSMU”, title “Excellent Worker of Public Health” in 2006.
