Master class with innovative technologies in endovascular surgery of peripheral arteries with a professor from India

A master class with the use of innovative technologies in endovascular surgery of peripheral arteries was held on November 10, 2022 at Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan with participation of Professor Gireesh Mukund Warawdekar from India.

Endovascular surgery has a number of differences and features compared to traditional surgical interventions. The doctor does not make incisions, but intervenes in the vessels through small punctures in the skin, so no general anesthesia is required. Local anesthesia is usually sufficient.

“We performed three surgeries: a patient with critical renal artery stenosis not amenable to medical treatment underwent stenting of the left renal artery. In the second clinical case, we performed endovascular recanalization with femoral artery stenting in a patient with lesions of the arterial basin of the left lower extremity who had previously undergone repeated unsuccessful reconstructive surgeries.  A nitinol stent with better flexibility and adaptation to the vessel wall was used. A third patient suffering from diabetic foot syndrome resulting in critical foot ischemia underwent balloon angioplasty of the tibial arteries. The treatment is based on a drug-coated balloon catheter, which prevents reformation of the plaque on the arterial wall. With this treatment, limb amputation can be avoided,” - Professor Gireesh Mukund Warawdekar shared the results of the master class.

In Kazakhstan, according to calculations of the International Diabetes Federation, 735,200 people aged 20 to 79 live with diabetes. Diabetic foot is one of the most dangerous complications of diabetes. In diabetic foot syndrome, impaired circulation in the affected vessels of the lower limbs leads to trophic changes in the skin of the lower leg and gangrene.

There are plans to open a “Diabetic Foot Treatment Center” at Medical Center Hospital of the President’s Affairs Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan in order to help patients suffering from this disease.
